The department of anesthesiology of Zhongshan Hospital affiliated Xiamen University was founded in 1954, and now there are 38 anesthesiologists with an average age of less than 45, among them there are 5 chief doctors, 16 associate chief doctors, 12 attending doctors. There are 3 doctors with PhD, and 18 ones with master's degree. There are 13 anesthesia nurses and 57 theater nurses, among them 3 co-chief superintendent nurses, 31 nurses in charge, 21 primary nurses, 2 nurses and 8 professional nurses. In 2016 the total amount of surgeries has reached 22 thousand.

Now it is a comprehensive department with clinical anesthesia, outpatient anesthesia, post anesthesia care unit and pain medicine. There are 22 operating rooms, among them 5 rooms with hundred level of laminar flow, and 10 PACU beds. Every OR room is equipped with anesthetic machine, monitors and other appliances. The department carries on clinical anesthesia, PACU, painless endoscopy examination and pain therapy in whole hospital. Every year there are 20 thousand anesthesias, with cases of patients from neonates of several hours to elders over a hundred years of age,  with cases of local anesthesia and complicated transplantation anesthesia. We also perform multi-model analgesia, including ultrasound guided technique. In 2016, we become the only training base of "comfort medicine" in Xiamen. Every year over 10 thousand out-patient anesthesias are accomplished. And also we take part in rescue of acute critical patients, with cases of over 400 every year.

We have held national reeducation programs and annual anesthesia conferences of Xiamen for 4 years. We are in charge of several researches of provincial and municipal and publish essays on SCI and national core journals. Every week academic activities are held to introduce medical progress and to improve foreign language ability. In 2004 standardized training of residents began in our department.
